(The Fruit of Those Who Pray and Those Who Do Not)

본문 (Passage): 출애굽기 24:12–18, 32:1–10 (Exodus 24:12–18, 32:1–10)

7:20) / "Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them." (Matthew 7:20)

The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commands I have written for their instruction."

As the supreme leader of Israel, Moses occupied a highly prominent position—one that carried the dangerous temptation to indulge in personal power and pride.
Yet, rather than settling for human applause or the secular voices around him, he responded to God’s call and ascended Mount Sinai, the place of prayer.
For Moses, prayer was not merely a means to solve personal problems; it was a heart-cry for deep communion with God, His Word, and His very presence. Prayer is a sacred pathway through which we surrender our self-glory and step directly into the glory of God. Those who faithfully maintain their place of prayer remain humble, fixing their eyes solely on God to bear holy fruit according to His sovereign will, no matter how elevated their earthly status may be.

While Moses communed with God on the mountain, the Israelites below failed to endure a mere 40 days and were quickly consumed by intense anxiety. Lacking prayer, they could not discern God’s timing or will, leaving them vulnerable to immediate uncertainty.
Consequently, they forgot God and manufactured a 'golden calf'—a secular symbol of prosperity from Egypt—to serve as their substitute security. Conforming to popular consensus and worldly trends, they engaged in self-indulgent revelry and collective sin.
The essence of a prayerless life is not necessarily explicitly denying God; rather, it is attending church while worshipping 'modern golden calves' (e.g., bank accounts, children's success, social status)—ultimately living a 'God-less life that uses God to love the world.'

Although both groups shared the same physical proximity to Mount Sinai, the presence or absence of prayer yielded starkly different outcomes: one bore the fruit of God's glory and Word, while the other reaped the fruit of sin and judgment.
Passing worldly lusts, temporal trends, and man-made idols can never save us. We must spiritually examine the nature of the fruit currently being produced in our daily lives. By stepping away from worldly distractions and restoring our dedicated place of prayer like Moses, we become true believers who discern and fulfill the eternal will of God.

(Small Group Discussion Questions)

While Moses spent 40 days in deep prayerful communion with God on the mountain, what transpired among the Israelites at the foot of the mountain? What spiritual patterns emerge in our own lives when we neglect prayer?

Q2. (Personal Reflection)

Just as the Israelites fashioned a golden calf to soothe their anxiety, what "modern golden calves" (e.g., financial security, children's achievements, social status, or anxious self-reliance) do you tend to lean on or get distracted by when your prayer life cools down?

Q3. (Application & Action)

To shut out the noise of the world and step into God's presence, what specific "personal time and place for prayer" will you establish and commit to keeping this week? Share your plan with the group.
